Gabriola Passage is a rock-bottom tidal corridor near Nanaimo, British Columbia, in DFO subarea 17-11, where depths range from 35 to 330 feet across mid-exposure water. The passage holds Lingcod through its spring and summer peaks from March into August, while Chinook and Coho Salmon move through from June to September, and Rockfish are present year-round. Anglers work the rock structure and deeper edges with jigging using metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits for Lingcod and Rockfish, dropping through the water column to reach fish holding along the bottom. Salmon fishing centers on trolling anchovy, herring, and flashers with hoochies across the corridor, timed to the tidal flow that funnels through the narrow passage. The strong currents that define this stretch concentrate bait and gamefish alike, making tide-driven presentations the reliable approach.
