Outer Exposed

Horswell Rock is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle off Nanaimo in DFO subarea 17-12, rising through water that runs 60 to 180 feet. The structure holds Chinook and Coho Salmon through their summer peak from June to September, while Lingcod concentrate here in the spring window of March and April and again from May into August. Black Rockfish work the pinnacle across a long stretch from February to September, and the rock also supports Quillback and Copper Rockfish alongside resident Pacific Halibut. Anglers troll anchovy, herring, or flashers with hoochies for salmon along the exposed edges, then drop metal jigs and swimbaits down the rock faces for Lingcod and Black Rockfish. Over deeper flats nearby, drift jigging with leadhead jigs and soft plastics or bait fishing whole herring puts offerings in front of Halibut.
