The Little Qualicum River Mouth Shoreline sits along a sand flat near Nanaimo, British Columbia, where the bottom holds a mid-exposure grade running from 5 to 25 feet deep. Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon both peak here from June through September, drawn to the transition where river outflow meets open water. Trolling dominates for both species, with anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, and trolling spoons worked across the flat for Chinook, and trolling spoons, hootchies, and cut plug herring for Coho. Anglers also mooch cut-plug or whole herring for Chinook over this depth band, or drop metal jigs when fish hold tight to the bottom. Bucktailing with bucktail flies takes Coho when they run near the surface.
