Outer Exposed

Nares Rock is an outer-exposed pinnacle in DFO subarea 17-5 off Nanaimo, British Columbia, where rock structure rises through depths of roughly 40 to 180 feet. The pinnacle holds Lingcod, which peak in March and April and again from May through August, alongside Black Rockfish that stay active from February through September and support species including Blue and Canary Rockfish. Lingcod respond to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked along the rock, while bait fishing with whole herring, live greenling, or squid covers the deeper edges. Black Rockfish come readily to jigging with metal jigs and swimbaits over the same structure, and the exposed pinnacle concentrates fish where current sweeps the rock. Chinook and Coho Salmon move through from June to September and take trolled anchovy, herring, spoons, and flashers with hoochies across the surrounding water.
