Outer Exposed

North Reef is an outer-exposed rock pinnacle in DFO subarea 17-6 off Nanaimo, British Columbia, rising through depths that range from 15 to 330 feet. Chinook and Coho Salmon both peak here from June through September, while Lingcod come on strong from March into April and again from May through August. Anglers troll anchovy, herring, and flashers with hoochies for Chinook along the reef's exposed edges, or work cut-plug herring on the mooch through the same water. Lingcod hold tight to the rock structure and respond to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs dropped along the pinnacle. The deeper flanks also hold Pacific Halibut, Canary, Copper, and Quillback Rockfish, with halibut taken on drift-jigged leadheads and metal jigs over the bottom.
