Penelakut Spit is a rock-bottom drop-off in DFO subarea 17-8 off Nanaimo, British Columbia, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet at a mid-exposure position. Chinook and Coho Salmon are the primary summer targets, both peaking from June through September, while Lingcod run strong in March and April and again from May into August. Anglers work the salmon by trolling anchovy, herring, or flashers with hoochies along the edge, with mooching cut-plug herring a productive alternative over the deeper contours. Lingcod hold to the rocky structure and respond to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs dropped along the drop-off, and the same jigging approach takes Black Rockfish through much of the year from February to September. Pacific Halibut and Pacific Cod also move across the deeper reaches of this spot, adding to the mix of bottomfish available over the rock.
