Porlier Pass is a tidal channel between Galiano and Valdes Islands on the eastern edge of the Strait of Georgia, with fishable structure running from 40 to 150 feet along its rocky walls and ledges. Strong currents funnel bait through the pass on tide changes, concentrating Chinook Salmon from June through August and Coho Salmon from June into September along the rips and back eddies. Downrigger trolling with whole herring, anchovies in teaser heads, trolling spoons, or hootchies covers the salmon window, while bucktailing works the surface for Coho when fish hold shallow. Lingcod stack on the harder structure from November through April and respond to jigging with leadhead jigs and swimbaits or metal jigs worked close to bottom. Rockfish hold on the same reef edges and broken bottom throughout the pass.
