Vernaci Point is an outer-exposed rock drop-off in DFO subarea 17-3, off Nanaimo, British Columbia, where the bottom falls through 260 to 660 feet. Chinook and Coho Salmon are the primary summer targets, both peaking from June through September, while Lingcod hold on the structure from March through April and again May into August. Salmon respond to trolling along the drop-off with anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, or trolling spoons, with mooching cut-plug herring a workable alternative on the deeper edges. Lingcod come to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked over the rock, and Pacific Halibut hold on the surrounding depth for drift jigging with leadhead jigs and soft plastics or metal jigs. The steep gradient also holds Pacific Cod and both Canary and Quillback Rockfish along the same structure.
