Outer Exposed

Virago Point is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off in DFO subarea 17-3 off Nanaimo, British Columbia, where the bottom falls away through depths of roughly 260 to 660 feet. Chinook and Coho Salmon are the primary targets from June through September, drawn to the structure and the baitfish it concentrates. Anglers work the upper water column for salmon by trolling anchovy, herring, flashers with hoochies, and trolling spoons, with mooching cut-plug or whole herring as a supporting approach. Lingcod hold along the rock through spring and summer, peaking March–April and May–August, and respond to metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked near the bottom. Pacific Halibut moving over the deeper contours take drift-jigged leadhead jigs with soft plastics, metal jigs, or herring across the same drop-off.
