About Hougestol Point Hump
Hougestol Point Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from an outer, exposed stretch of water off Port Hardy, British Columbia, with depths running roughly 100 to 250 feet over hard bottom. The structure holds Pacific Halibut, which peak from March through August, alongside Lingcod that come on strongest from May through August, plus a mix of rockfish including rougheye, silvergray, and shortraker, as well as Pacific cod and sablefish. Halibut respond to drift fishing with whole herring, salmon bellies, octopus, or squid across the deeper flanks, while jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, or swimbaits works the pinnacle for lingcod. Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon move through from late spring into fall, with Chinook peaking May through August and Coho from June into September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, spoons, or hootchies. The exposed position and steep rock relief concentrate fish near the summit and along the drop-offs, making the depth transitions the focus of most drifts and jigging passes.
