Penfold Islet Hump

Penfold Islet Hump is a rock pinnacle in the outer, exposed waters off Port McNeill, rising through depths that range from 170 to 450 feet. The structure holds Pacific Halibut and Chinook Salmon through their May–August peaks, with Lingcod moving across multiple windows in February–March, June–July, and August–September, and Coho Salmon working the area from May into September. Anglers target halibut here by drift jigging leadhead jigs with plastic swimbaits or metal jigs over the rock, backing that up with bottom bait fishing whole herring, salmon heads, or octopus. Lingcod respond to jigging metal jigs and swimbaits tight to the pinnacle, while Chinook and Coho are taken by trolling whole herring, anchovy, spoons, or flashers with hootchies through the water column above the high spot. The deep rock also supports Rougheye, Blackgill, and Shortraker Rockfish, Pacific Cod, and Sablefish across the broader depth range.
