Poor Mans Rock Hump is a rocky pinnacle rising from the seafloor off Qualicum Beach, sitting in DFO subarea 14-3 with depths running from 155 to 455 feet. The structure holds Lingcod, which peak from January through March, alongside Rougheye Rockfish, Canary Rockfish, and Pacific Ocean Perch drawn to the hard bottom and vertical relief. Lingcod respond to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, and leadhead jigs worked along the rock, with whole herring, squid, or live greenling on bait rigs as a secondary approach. Chinook Salmon move through from July to September and take trolled anchovy, herring, spoons, and hootchies, while Coho Salmon run from June into October and hold to trolled hootchies, spoons, and bait strips behind a flasher. The mid-exposure position and pinnacle shape concentrate fish across the depth range, making the transition zones between rock and open water the productive water to fish.
