Kains Point sits off Winter Harbour at the outer, exposed edge of northwestern Vancouver Island, where a rock drop-off falls through depths of 260 to 660 feet. Chinook Salmon peak from April through August and Coho Salmon from May through September, both taken by trolling anchovy, herring, hoochies, and trolling spoons along the structure, with mooching cut-plug or whole herring as a supporting approach. Lingcod hold along the rock and peak from February through April and again from June through August, responding to jigging with metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and swimbaits worked close to the bottom. Pacific Halibut move through from May to August and are worked with drift jigging over the deeper edges of the drop-off. Black Rockfish stack up on the same rock from May through September and take metal jigs, leadhead jigs, and soft plastic swimbaits.
