About Low Rock
Low Rock is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Crescent City, California, where the bottom falls through 30 to 40 feet of water. The structure holds Lingcod, which peak from February to March and again from August to October, alongside aggregate Rockfish that peak May through September and Chinook Salmon running April into September. Lingcod respond to jigging with metal jigs, swimbaits, or leadhead jigs worked over the rock, with live bait such as rockfish, sanddabs, or squid a reliable alternative. Rockfish come off the bottom on shrimp flies, swimbaits, squid strips, and metal jigs, while Chinook are targeted by trolling anchovies, herring, spoons, or hoochies through the same exposed edge. The rock bottom and hard drop concentrate fish along the break, making it a productive stretch to work close to the structure.
