About Sunset Point

Sunset Point is an outer-exposed rocky drop-off off Monterey, California, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet. Chinook Salmon run strongest from March through July and hold the primary draw here, worked by trolling anchovies, spoons, hoochies, and flashers, or by mooching with anchovies and sardines on banana weights. The rock structure supports aggregate Rockfish through their April-to-October peak, taken on bait fishing with squid strips, shrimp flies, live anchovies, or cut mackerel, while jigging metal and leadhead jigs turns up Lingcod during their late-fall and spring windows. California Halibut moves through from March into September and responds to drift fishing with live anchovies, sardines, or squid over the deeper margins. The steep contour and exposed setting concentrate fish along the edge, where holding depth shifts with the tide across the rocky face.
