About Barnacle Reef
Barnacle Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, at 30.1501, -86.3146. Red Snapper peak here from April through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, while Greater Amberjack hit their peak in April and May and Gag Grouper move onto the structure from October through December alongside resident Red Grouper. Bottom fishing with live pinfish, cigar minnows, squid, or cut bait accounts for most of the snapper and grouper. Vertical jigging with butterfly jigs or metal jigs works the reef for amberjack and snapper, and live hardtail sent to the bottom draws amberjack strikes. King Mackerel cruise the area from April through October and respond to slow trolling with live cigar minnows or live blue runners around the reef's edges.
