About Spanish Shanty Point

Spanish Shanty Point is an exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Panama City, Florida, where the seafloor falls from 15 feet to 60 feet within the Panhandle region of Florida's Gulf state waters. Spanish Mackerel run here from March through October, Gray Snapper peak from May through August, Red Drum peak from August through October, and Sheepshead take over from January through March, with Common Snook also on the target list. Trolling small trolling spoons and diving plugs along the outer edge of the drop-off works well for Spanish Mackerel, while casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs reaches fish breaking on the surface. Along the deeper sand edge, bottom fishing with live pinfish, live shrimp, or cut sardines targets Gray Snapper, and fiddler crabs and sand fleas on the bottom draw Sheepshead through the winter months. In the fall, Red Drum push along the slope, where jigheads with paddle tails, gold spoons, and cut mullet on the bottom cover the transition from shallow sand to deeper water.
