About Fred Bayou
Fred Bayou is a protected inner bay off Panama City, Florida, with soft mud bottom and depths of 5 to 10 feet in the sheltered waters of the Panhandle. Red Drum peak from August through October and respond to inshore casting with soft plastic jerkbaits, jigheads with paddle tails, gold spoons, and topwater plugs worked over the shallow mud flats. Sheepshead take over from January through March, when bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, sand fleas, or oysters produces steady bites. Gray Snapper run strongest from May through August on live pinfish, live shrimp, cut sardines, and squid fished on the bottom. Spanish Mackerel move through from March through October and hit small trolling spoons, metal jigs, and gotcha plugs, and Common Snook round out the bayou's species list.
