About Basin Bayou
Basin Bayou is a protected, mud-bottomed bay near Destin in Florida's Panhandle, with sheltered water running 5 to 10 feet deep. Sheepshead lead the winter season from January through March, spotted seatrout peak in March and April and again in October and November, and red drum push in strongest from September through November. Spanish mackerel hold a long window from March through October, while gray snapper and common snook round out the bayou's species list. Bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas works the mud bottom for sheepshead, and live pinfish or live finger mullet fished on the bottom draw both seatrout and red drum. In the calm inner water, sight casting with gold spoons or paddle tail swimbaits targets cruising red drum, and casting metal jigs or small spoons to breaking fish connects with Spanish mackerel.
