About Black Point
Black Point is an exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Destin in the Florida Panhandle, falling from 40 to 120 feet along the outer edge of the Gulf. Sheepshead dominate the winter bite from January through March, and anglers work the slope by bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, sand fleas, and barnacle-encrusted mussels. Spanish mackerel run from March through October, when trolling small spoons and diving plugs or casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs to breaking fish covers the open water above the edge. Red drum peak from September through November and respond to bottom fishing with cut bait, live pinfish, or live finger mullet along the deeper contour. Spotted seatrout move through in March–April and again in October–November, while gray snapper and common snook round out the species that hold along this outer-exposed structure.
