About Choctawhatchee Bay
Choctawhatchee Bay is a protected inner bay at Destin on the Florida Panhandle, with sand bottom running 5 to 15 feet deep. Sheepshead lead the winter fishing from January through March, and spotted seatrout peak in March–April and again in October–November. Red drum hit their stride from September through November, and Spanish mackerel move through the bay from March to October. Gray snapper and common snook round out the species list. Anglers target sheepshead by bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas, while seatrout respond to popping cork rigs and paddle tail swimbaits drifted across the shallow sand. Spanish mackerel fall to small spoons trolled through the open water or metal jigs cast to breaking fish.
