About Clay Point
Clay Point is an outer, exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Destin, Florida, within the Panhandle Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, with depths running from 260 to 660 feet. Sheepshead peak from January through March, Spotted Seatrout show in March–April and again in October–November, Red Drum peak from September through November, and Spanish Mackerel run from March through October. Gray Snapper and Common Snook round out the target list. Anglers work the sand edges of the drop-off by bottom fishing for Sheepshead with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, sand fleas, and barnacle-encrusted mussels. Spanish Mackerel respond to trolling with small spoons, clark spoons, planers, and diving plugs, and to casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs when fish are breaking at the surface.
