About Conch Reef
Conch Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where structure on the open bottom draws reef fish and pelagic predators alike. Red Snapper peak from April through July, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Greater Amberjack from April through May, while Gag Grouper peak from October through December and Red Grouper hold on the structure as well. King Mackerel peak from April through October, and anglers target them by slow trolling live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners around the reef. Bottom fishing dominates for the grouper and snapper, with live pinfish, live cigar minnows, squid, and cut bait dropped tight to the structure. Amberjack respond to live hardtail fished near the bottom, and vertical jigging with butterfly jigs or metal jigs also produces fish over the reef.
