About Dons Bayou
Dons Bayou is a protected inner bay off Destin, Florida, with soft mud bottom running 5 to 15 feet deep in the Panhandle's Gulf state waters. Sheepshead lead the winter calendar from January through March, when bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas puts baits where these fish feed. Spotted seatrout peak in March–April and again in October–November, and drifting with popping cork rigs or paddle tail swimbaits covers the shallow bay water efficiently. Red drum push through from September to November and respond to bottom fishing with cut bait or live finger mullet across the mud. Spanish mackerel are around from March through October, while gray snapper and common snook round out the bayou's species list.
