About LA-1 Reef
LA-1 Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where placed structure holds bottom fish and draws pelagic predators. Red Snapper peak from April through July, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Greater Amberjack in April and May, while Gag Grouper peak from October through December and Red Grouper also hold on the structure. Bottom fishing dominates the snapper and grouper action, with live pinfish, cigar minnows, squid, and cut bait dropped tight to the reef. Amberjack respond to live hardtail and live pinfish fished near the bottom, and vertical jigging with butterfly jigs and metal jigs works the water column over the structure. King Mackerel peak from April through October and patrol above the reef, where slow trolling with live cigar minnows, live menhaden, and live blue runners targets them.
