About LA-4 Reef
LA-4 Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where the structure concentrates both pelagic and bottom-dwelling species. King Mackerel patrol the reef from April through October, and slow trolling live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners works them effectively over and around the structure. Greater Amberjack peak in April and May and respond to live hardtail or live pinfish fished near the bottom, with vertical jigging using butterfly jigs as a strong alternative. Red Snapper hold tight to the reef from April through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, and bottom fishing with cigar minnows, squid, or live pinfish takes both. Gag Grouper move onto the structure from October through December alongside resident Red Grouper, and bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or cut bait targets them.
