About LAARS Reef

LAARS Reef is an artificial reef in federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where placed structure on the open bottom draws reef fish and passing pelagics. Red Snapper peak from April through July, Gray Snapper from May through August, and Greater Amberjack in April and May, while Gag Grouper peak from October through December and Red Grouper also hold on the structure. Bottom fishing with cigar minnows, squid, live pinfish, or cut bait is the standard approach for snapper and gag over the reef, and live hardtail (blue runner) dropped to the bottom targets amberjack. Vertical jigging with butterfly jigs or metal jigs also works the water column above the structure for amberjack and Red Snapper. From April through October, King Mackerel cruise the area and respond to slow trolling with live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners.
