About Liberty Ship Reef

Liberty Ship Reef is an artificial reef in Florida's Panhandle state waters off Destin, where sunken structure concentrates both reef dwellers and passing pelagics. King mackerel peak from April through October and fall to slow trolling with live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners, while Spanish mackerel run March through October and respond to trolled small spoons and diving plugs. Gray snapper hold tight to the structure from May through August, and bottom fishing with live pinfish, live shrimp, or cut squid puts baits in their strike zone. Sheepshead take over in the cooler months of January through March, picking at fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and barnacle-encrusted mussels dropped close to the reef. Gag grouper peak from October through December on live pinfish and live grunts fished on the bottom, and cobia move through from March to June and again in September and October, when sight casting bucktail jigs or live eels to cruising fish is the dominant approach.
