About Nelson Point

Nelson Point is an outer, exposed rock drop-off off Destin, Florida, within the Panhandle Region of Florida Gulf state waters, where the bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 660 feet. Sheepshead peak from January through March, Spotted Seatrout run strongest in March–April and again in October–November, Red Drum peak from September through November, and Spanish Mackerel hold from March through October, with Gray Snapper and Common Snook also on the target list. The rocky edge suits bottom fishing for Sheepshead with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, sand fleas, or barnacle-encrusted mussels, and anglers also jig the structure with jig heads tipped with shrimp. Red Drum respond to bottom fishing with cut bait, live pinfish, or live finger mullet, and to jigging with bucktail jigs and soft plastic jigs. Over the open water above the drop, trolling small spoons, clark spoons, and diving plugs behind planers targets Spanish Mackerel, while casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs to breaking fish covers surface activity.
