About Shirk Point
Shirk Point is an outer, exposed drop-off near Destin, Florida, where a sand bottom falls away through depths of 40 to 120 feet in the Panhandle's Gulf state waters. Sheepshead peak here from January through March, Spotted Seatrout run strongest in March–April and again in October–November, and Red Drum take over from September through November. Spanish Mackerel hold through a long March-to-October window, with Gray Snapper and Common Snook rounding out the species list. Sheepshead anglers work the edge of the drop with bottom fishing rigs baited with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas, while Red Drum respond to cut bait and live pinfish fished on the sand. Over the deeper water, trolling small spoons and diving plugs covers ground for roaming Spanish Mackerel, and casting metal jigs to breaking fish works when schools push bait to the surface.
