About Smack Point
Smack Point is an outer, exposed drop-off off Destin, Florida, where a sand bottom falls away through depths of 260 to 655 feet in the Panhandle Region of Florida's Gulf state waters. Sheepshead peak here from January through March, Spanish mackerel hold from March through October, spotted seatrout peak in March–April and again in October–November, and red drum run strongest from September through November. Gray snapper and common snook round out the species list. Along the edge of the drop, bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, or sand fleas targets sheepshead, while red drum respond to cut bait, live pinfish, and live finger mullet fished on the bottom. Above the deeper water, anglers troll small spoons, clark spoons, and diving plugs behind planers for Spanish mackerel, and cast metal jigs or gotcha plugs when fish break the surface.
