About Starfish Reef
Starfish Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Gulf waters off Destin, Florida, where placed structure on open bottom draws a mix of reef fish and pelagics. Red Snapper peak from April through July and Gray Snapper from May through August, and both respond to bottom fishing with live pinfish, cigar minnows, squid, or cut bait dropped tight to the structure. Greater Amberjack stack over the reef in April and May, taking live hardtail (blue runner) and live pinfish fished near the bottom, with vertical jigging using butterfly jigs and knife jigs as a productive alternative. King Mackerel patrol the water column above the reef from April through October and fall to slow trolling with live cigar minnows, live menhaden, or live blue runners. Gag Grouper peak from October through December and hold close to the structure for bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or live cigar minnows, while Red Grouper round out the reef's bottom species.
