About Toms Bayou
Toms Bayou is a protected inner bay near Destin in Florida's Panhandle, with a soft mud bottom that runs 5 to 10 feet deep. Sheepshead lead the winter fishery and peak from January through March, while Spotted Seatrout move through in spring (March–April) and again in fall (October–November). Red Drum peak from September through November, and Spanish Mackerel stay active from March through October, with Gray Snapper and Common Snook rounding out the species list. Across the shallow mud bottom, anglers bottom fish fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and live shrimp for Sheepshead, and fish live shrimp, live pinfish, and live finger mullet on the bottom for seatrout. Fall Red Drum respond to bottom fishing with cut bait and live finger mullet, while Spanish Mackerel are worked by casting metal jigs and small spoons to breaking fish.
