About Hillsboro Inlet
Hillsboro Inlet is an exposed tidal corridor near Fort Lauderdale, where a sand-bottomed channel running 10 to 35 feet deep links the Intracoastal Waterway with the open Atlantic. Common Snook peak from May through July, Gray Snapper from June through July, Mutton Snapper from March through June, and Yellowtail Snapper from April through July, while King Mackerel take over from January through March and Crevalle Jack round out the mix. Snook anglers favor live bait drifting with live shrimp, live pilchards, or live mullet along the corridor, and casting swimbaits or jerkbaits works as a supporting approach. Snapper anglers bottom fish the sand with live shrimp, cut bait, or live ballyhoo, and they target yellowtail by chumming and drift fishing with glass minnows or squid strips. In winter, slow trolling live goggle eyes or live blue runners off the outer edge of the inlet puts baits in front of King Mackerel.
