About Mako Reef
Mako Reef is an artificial reef off Fort Lauderdale, Florida, within the Southeast Region of Florida's Atlantic state waters. The structure holds a mix of reef and pelagic species through the year, with Common Snook peaking May through July, Yellowtail Snapper April through July, Mutton Snapper March through June, Gray Snapper June through July, and King Mackerel January through March, while Crevalle Jack also patrol the reef. Yellowtail Snapper respond to chumming and drift fishing with glass minnows, cut ballyhoo, live shrimp, or squid strips worked back toward the structure. Mutton and Gray Snapper hold tight to the reef and take bottom fishing presentations of live pilchards, cut bait, squid, or, for muttons, live ballyhoo. In the winter window, anglers target King Mackerel around the reef by slow trolling live goggle eyes, threadfin herring, pilchards, or blue runners.
