About Mooney Point
Mooney Point is an outer, exposed rocky drop-off off Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the bottom falls away through 260 to 660 feet in the Southeast Region of Florida's Atlantic state waters. The rock ledges hold Mutton Snapper peaking March through June, Yellowtail Snapper from April through July, and Gray Snapper in June and July, while Common Snook peak from May through July and Crevalle Jack round out the mix. Along the edge, anglers bottom fish live pilchards, cut bait, and squid for mutton and gray snapper, and chumming and drift fishing with glass minnows and cut ballyhoo pulls yellowtail up off the rock. King Mackerel move over the drop-off from January through March, when slow trolling live goggle eyes, threadfin herring, and blue runners covers the deeper water above the structure. When a drift sweeps the bait across the full depth range of the ledge, jigging bucktail jigs and soft plastic jigs near the bottom also reaches the snapper.
