About Gasparilla Mitgation Reef
Gasparilla Mitgation Reef is an artificial reef in the Charlotte Harbor Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, off the coast near Fort Myers. Sheepshead hold tight to the structure from November through March, and gray snapper take over from May through August. Spotted seatrout and Spanish mackerel push through in March and April, common snook peak from April to June, and red drum run from August into October, with a second Spanish mackerel push from September through November. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas dropped straight onto the reef works well for sheepshead, while gray snapper respond to live pilchards, cut bait, or squid fished on the same structure. When Spanish mackerel are on the reef, anglers cast small spoons and jigs or work a chum line of live shiners and cut bait to bring the fish within range.
