About Santa Rita Reef
Santa Rita Reef is an artificial reef in the federal Atlantic waters off Southeast Florida, southeast of Miami. Its structure holds Black Grouper and Greater Amberjack, while pelagic traffic brings King Mackerel from November through March, Wahoo from September through December, and Dorado from March through July. Mutton Snapper peak from April through June, when anglers bottom fish the reef with live ballyhoo, live pilchards, cut bait, or squid, and work jigs tipped with strip bait. For King Mackerel, slow trolling live goggle eyes, live blue runners, or live pilchards around the reef is the dominant approach. Wahoo fall to high-speed trolling with weighted trolling lures, bullet-head lures, and trolling plugs, and Dorado answer to trolled rigged ballyhoo and skirted trolling lures.
