About South Hen and Chickens Hump
South Hen and Chickens Hump is a rock pinnacle rising off the outer, exposed reef line near Islamorada, sitting in 25 to 45 feet of water in the federal Atlantic waters off the Florida Keys. Black grouper hold tight to the rock from November through February, and bottom fishing with live pinfish or live grunts dropped close to the structure is the standard approach. Mutton snapper move onto the hump from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or squid, while bucktail jigs work the edges when fish suspend off the pinnacle. Dorado push past the outer edge from March through July, and trolling rigged ballyhoo along the surrounding water intercepts passing fish. Greater amberjack, king mackerel, and wahoo also patrol the hump, rounding out a mix of bottom and pelagic species over a compact piece of structure.
