About Lignumvitae Key Bank
Lignumvitae Key Bank is an exposed sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water along the outer edge of the Southwest Region's state waters. Permit and bonefish define the spring season here, with both peaking from March through May and bonefish returning in a second push from September through October. Over the open sand bottom, anglers sight cast to tailing permit with live crabs, crab flies, and bucktail jigs, while bonefish draw spinning tackle sight fishing with live shrimp and soft plastic shrimp. Mutton snapper peak from March through June and respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, and squid. Great barracuda take over the bank from December through February, cruising the shallow sand where sight casting with tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits draws aggressive strikes, and cobia round out the mix of species that work the flat.
