About Matecumbe Keys Hump
Matecumbe Keys Hump is a rocky pinnacle off Islamorada in the federal Atlantic waters of the Florida Keys, rising to between 15 and 40 feet on an outer, exposed stretch of reef. Black grouper hold tight to the rock and peak from November through February. Mutton snapper take over from March through June, and dorado move through from March to July. Bottom fishing with live pinfish, live grunts, or live ballyhoo works the rock for grouper, while cut ballyhoo, live pilchards, and squid drop near the structure draw mutton snapper. Greater amberjack, king mackerel, and wahoo also patrol the hump, and trolling rigged or skirted ballyhoo around its edges puts baits in front of passing dorado.
