About Shell Key Bank
Shell Key Bank is an exposed outer sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, holding 5 to 10 feet of water within the southwest region's state waters. Permit and bonefish both peak here from March through May, with a second bonefish window in September and October, while mutton snapper run strongest from March into June. Great barracuda dominate the flat in the cooler months, peaking December through February, and cobia also cruise the bank. On the shallow sand, anglers sight cast live crabs or crab flies to permit and work live shrimp or bucktail jigs on spinning tackle for bonefish. Mutton snapper respond to bottom fishing with live ballyhoo, cut ballyhoo, or live pilchards, and barracuda strike tube lures and topwater plugs cast across the flat.
