About Cross Bank
Cross Bank is an exposed sand flat on the outer edge of Florida Bay near Islamorada, with water running 10 to 15 feet deep across open bottom. Permit move across the sand from March through May, and bonefish peak in the same spring window before returning in September and October. Great barracuda take over in the cooler months from December through February, while mutton snapper hold here from March through June. Sight casting with live crabs or bucktail jigs targets permit tailing across the open sand, and spinning tackle with live shrimp or soft plastic shrimp covers cruising bonefish. Bottom fishing with live pilchards, cut ballyhoo, or squid works the deeper stretches for mutton snapper, and cobia also turn up over the bank.
