About Buchanan Bank
Buchanan Bank is an exposed sand flat off Islamorada in the Florida Keys, holding 10 to 15 feet of water over open bottom in the state waters of the Southwest Region. Bonefish work the bank during their spring peak from March through May and again in September and October, while permit share the same March-to-May window and tarpon push through from March into June. The clean sand bottom suits sight fishing with spinning tackle for bonefish, using live shrimp, bucktail jigs, or soft plastic shrimp. Permit anglers sight cast live crabs, crab flies, or soft plastic crabs to cruising fish, and tarpon respond to live mullet, live pinfish, and live crabs. Red drum also hold on the flat, and great barracuda take over in the cooler months from December through February, when sight casting tube lures, topwater plugs, and jerkbaits draws strikes along the open edges.
