About Southwest Gate
Southwest Gate is a protected sand-bottom corridor in the inshore waters south of Naples, Florida, with depths running from the shallows to about 15 feet. Winter and early spring belong to Sheepshead (peak January through March) and Spotted Seatrout (peak February through April), while Common Snook (April through July), Gray Snapper (May through July), and Tarpon (March through August) carry the action into summer. Spanish Mackerel move through in spring and again from September through November, overlapping with the Red Drum peak in September and October. Bottom fishing with live shrimp or fiddler crabs targets Sheepshead and Gray Snapper along the deeper edges of the corridor, and live pilchards and pinfish draw strikes from Snook and Red Drum. Over the shallower sand, drifting with soft plastic paddle tails on jigheads or popping corks with soft plastics covers water for Spotted Seatrout.
