About Sunfish Flat

Sunfish Flat is an exposed sand flat in the Gulf waters off Naples, Florida, with depths running from 15 to 35 feet across open bottom. Sheepshead peak from January through March, Spotted Seatrout from February through April, Tarpon from March into August, Common Snook from April through July, and Red Drum in September and October. Live bait fishing is the dominant approach for Red Drum, Snook, and Tarpon, with live pilchards, pinfish, and live shrimp covering all three, while Tarpon also take live crabs and live threadfin herring. Seatrout respond to soft plastic paddle tails on jigheads and popping corks with soft plastics worked over the sand, and bucktail jigs bounced along the deeper end of the flat reach fish holding near 35 feet. Sheepshead come to bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, and sand fleas.
