About Turtle Island
Turtle Island is an exposed rocky drop-off on the Gulf side of Naples, Florida, where the bottom falls away from the shallows into water reaching 20 feet. Sheepshead stack along the rock from January through March, and spotted seatrout move through from February to April. Common snook and tarpon carry the action from spring into summer, with snook peaking April through July and tarpon March through August, while gray snapper hold on the structure from May to July. Spanish mackerel run past in March–April and again September through November, and red drum close out the year in September and October. Bottom fishing with live shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas tight to the rock ledge targets sheepshead and gray snapper, and live bait fishing with pilchards, pinfish, or mullet along the edge of the drop-off draws strikes from snook, red drum, and tarpon.
