About East River
East River is a shallow sand-bottomed corridor near Pensacola, Florida, running 0 to 10 feet deep in the exposed waters of the Florida Panhandle. Red Drum peak here in September and October and respond to inshore casting with soft plastic jerkbaits, jigheads with paddletails, gold spoons, and topwater plugs worked across the open sand. Sheepshead take over from January through March, when bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, sand fleas, and oysters puts baits in front of fish holding along the corridor. Gray Snapper peak from May through August and hit live shrimp, cut bait, live pinfish, and squid on the bottom. Spanish Mackerel run from April through October and fall to trolled small spoons and straw rigs, while Common Snook round out the species mix in this shallow, sand-lined channel.
