About Magazine Point
Magazine Point is a sand-bottom drop-off near Pensacola, Florida, where the seafloor falls from 15 to 45 feet in moderately exposed Panhandle waters. Red Drum peak here in September and October, and anglers work the edge of the drop with soft plastic jerkbaits, jigheads with paddletails, and gold spoons, or soak live finger mullet and cut menhaden on the bottom. Sheepshead take over from January through March, holding along the slope where bottom fishing with fiddler crabs, live shrimp, and sand fleas draws steady bites. Gray Snapper fill the summer months from May through August and respond to live shrimp, live pinfish, and squid fished on the deeper end of the depth range. Spanish Mackerel run from April through October over the drop, where trolling small spoons and straw rigs or casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs covers the water column, and Common Snook round out the species mix at the spot.
