About Spanish Point
Spanish Point is an outer, exposed sand-bottom drop-off off Pensacola in the Panhandle Region of Florida's Gulf state waters, with depths running from 260 to 660 feet. Target species here include Common Snook, Red Drum peaking in September and October, Sheepshead peaking from January through March, Gray Snapper peaking from May through August, and Spanish Mackerel running from April through October. Along the sand drop-off, bottom fishing with live shrimp, cut bait, live pinfish, or squid is the dominant approach for Gray Snapper, and Sheepshead respond to fiddler crabs, sand fleas, and oysters fished on the bottom. Red Drum take live finger mullet, cut mullet, and cut menhaden presented on the bottom. Spanish Mackerel through the warm months fall to trolled small spoons, straw rigs, and small diving plugs, while casting metal jigs and gotcha plugs also works.
